Emily Dickinson is the epitome of the modern poet. Her poetry breaks from the traditional style with dashes to separate ideas. Dickinson, also, challenged the religious belief of her time. Growing up as a Puritan in Massachusetts, Emily Dickinson knew the bible, yet as an adult, she questioned that belief. Many of her poems seem focused on death; death of the body, death of the soul, death of the mind. Why was she so intrigued with death? The poems that embody this theme are: â€Å"Success is counted sweetest† (#112), â€Å"Safe in the Alabaster Chambers† (#124), â€Å"I like a look of Agony† (#339), â€Å"I felt a funeral in my brain† (#340), â€Å"Because I could not stop for death† (#479), and â€Å"I heard a Fly buzz-when I died† (#591). During this time, she wrote over one-thousand seven-hundred poems, which were organized in a packet called fascicles. Only a few of her poems were published within her lifetime, but after they were revised into more of a conventional means, she stopped seeking to be published. Themes that seem to repeat themselves in Dickinson’s poems are religion, love, nature, and death. Though, in the one-thousand seven hundred poems that Dickinson wrote she seemed to be intrigued about death. Many of the poems seem to contradict each other by means of what happens during and after death. She seems to be struggling with the religious belief of living eternity in the afterlife with God. Each poem concerning death gives a deeper look into what Dickinson was struggling with. It is interesting that no two poems dealt with death in the same way. One poem deals with the pain and anguish of death as seen in â€Å"I like a look of Agony†. She tore me apart as once the Shapers song had done (102). Grendel is enchanted by her beauty and enraged when she is forced to serve even the lowest of the men. He realizes that she symbolizes the idea of moral bsolutes and Christian values. She sacrifices herself in order to save her people and family from war by becoming a peace weaver. She also acts selflessly and is a constant source of comfort to people. The queen smiled. Impossibly, like roses blooming in the heart of December, she said, Thats past (104). When the soldiers make fun of Unferth for killing his brothers, she goes up to him offering forgiveness. And yet I was teased tortured b y the red of her hair and set of her chin and the white of her shoulders teased toward disbelief in the dragons truths (108). He is tempted to stray from the dragons views, because of how Wealtheow contradicts the dragons sartrean beliefs. Gardner portrays Wealtheow this way to show how Grendel remains inexorable in his sartrean and nihilistic beliefs even after she disproves them. Near the end of the novel, Grendel is presented yet another chance to change his sartrean and nihilistic ways through the arrival of Beowulf, who Gardner portrays as he epitome of Martin Bubers beliefs. The Universe does have a purpose and I concur with John Gardner that there are moral absolutes. There is a right and a wrong, and a difference between good and bad. There is a difference between cheating on a test to get an A and studying for 5 hours to get the same grade. Sartres existentialism grouped both good and bad together. Sartre would classify Adam Lanza, the shooter in Connecticut who caused he deaths of 26 innocent people with people like Mother Teresa, who spent their lives trying to make a difference. I think that humans have free will and it is their choice to live their life how they want based on the decisions they make.
